Comment/Synopsis

A woman is charged with murder and the events leading up to the trial are told in flash backs from all the witnessess involved. Joan Crawford is a blackmailer with a disfigured face who gets involved with a plastic surgeon who offers to repair her disfigurement and a man who wants to ensure he gets what he thinks is his rightful inheritance. This is one of Joan Crawford's best performances as she moves from a heartless manipulative woman to a more complex woman who develops her emotions and starts to draw out the sympathies of the viewer. She uses all her acting skills rather than the fancy dressess that she wears in other films. The use of the courtroom testimony as flashbacks allows the plot to unfold and also give the plot twists in a natural and unforced way.
