A young beautiful woman (Hedy Lamar) marries an older man only to discover that he is cold and uninterested in her. She leaves him, return to her father and whilst out for a ride has a naked swim and meets and then falls in love with a young man. Inevitably they all three meet up. This was Hedy Lamar's break through film after which she was signed by MGM and moved to Hollywood. This is a great example of European cinema from the mid 1930's. This is not the film for you if you want all action CGI and a fast moving plot. This film is beautifully produced and filmed, with long lingering shots, that explores relationships, sensuality and sexuality. The sexuality is subtle and subdued and looks back to the romantics of the 19th century rather than forward to the brash overt sexuality that came post-war. The film was controversial because of the naked scene, but that is only a very small part of a good film. This film is largely silent, though with some German dialogue in a few scenes.
