Anthony Quinn was born in Mexico, but made his name in Hollywood, playing ethnic roles, including several memorable ones as a Greek. During his career he appeared in over 130 films over 65 years. Born in Mexico his family moved to America and had a variety of jobs before taking up acting. His first film role was a small part in The Plainsman. He was then signed by Paramount and then married Katherine DeMille, daughter of Cecile DeMille. He then appeared in a variety of ethnic minority roles. In 1941 he appeared in the western They Died with Their Boots On which started to develop his acting talents. In 1947 he moved back more into the theatre but in 1952 Elia Kazan cast him in Viva Zapata!. He was the first Mexican American actor to win an Oscar. This was the film that moved him into the star category. he then moved to Italy and appeared in Federico Fellini's La strada. This showed off his acting skills and he was offered better roles like Lust For Life for Vincente Minnelli and won his second Oscar for this role. He then stared in the wonderful Guns of Navarone with a number of other great actors and then supporting role in Lawrence Of Arabia. Perhaps his most famous role was in Zorba The Greek and was his last Oscar nomination. Through the 1970's he appeared in various less high profile films. Though Lion of the Desert is one of the better of this period. Later he appeared in the Spike Lee film Jungle Fever. He continued to work through the 1990's
