Career / Biography
Richard Gere was a popular leading man in the 1980's and 1990's. As a student he was an athlete and then started working in various stage roles. His first major screen role was in Looking For Mr Goodbar. Days of Heaven was a period drama which was followed by the very different Yanks and American Gigolo, although American Gigolo did move him up to being a star. It was An Officer And A Gentleman that made Richard Gere the character he became known for. In 1984 he stared in Francis Ford Coppola's Cotton Club. In this he actually plays the trumpet. He followed this with several crime thrillers including Internal Affairs in which he was villain and gained critical acclaim. Pretty Woman with Julia Roberts was a major commercial success and one of his biggest successes. He followed this with Japanese director Akira Kurosawa's Rhapsody in August.
Sommersby was a return to period drama in the American civil war and then English period drama in First Knight. This was followed by several political thrillers before returning to romantic comedy with Runaway Bride reuniting with Julia Roberts. He then appeared in several drama's including Robert Altman's Dr. T and the Women. With Chicago he returned to his musical roots in the film version of the musical play. Shall we dance was another romantic comedy. He considered The Hoax one of his best films although not commercially successful. Following this he has worked mainly in independent films due to his political views over China making the major studios reluctant to work with him. His first marriage was to the model Cindy Crawford and his second marriage was to Carey Lowell.
