Their first film was the low budget Blood Simple, which was followed by the bigger budget of the comdey Raising Arizona. It was a big success at the box office. Miller's Crossing is a depresion era gangster film. Barton Fink is a period drama about a writer with writers block. This along with The Hudsucker Proxy were well recived critically but did not go down well at the box office.
It was Fargo, a comparatively low budget thriller, that gave them a box office success. The Big Lebowski is somewhat surreal comic film that has become something of a cult film. The Man Who Wasn't There was filmed in black and White and is in the style of film noir. Intolerable Cruelty was a romantic comedy of a divorce lawyer and a gold digger. They then remake the Ealing comedy The ladykillers. No Country For Old Men was a return to the thriller genre and won them the Best Director Oscar. Burn after Reading was a return to comedy. True Grit was their biggest success at the box office and was nominated for 10 Osacrs including Best Director. Hail Ceasr! is a comedy set in the 1950's in Hollywood.
