A couple constantly argue and their marriage is falling apart. When he starts an affair with a widow of very different character to his wife, she both pushes him away and tries to bring him close. Elizabeth Taylor gives an over the top performance as the unstable wife, whilst Susannah York is the quiet demure mistress and Michael Caine is in the middle playing both of them. The problem with the film is that both Elizabeth Taylor's and Michael Cain's characters are unpleasant.
