When the mother of a young woman (Helena Bonham Carter) dies she is taken in by her rich aunt (Charlotte Rampling) and has to choose between the wealth and place in society from her aunt or being penniless with her journalist lover (Linus Roache) . She is introduced to a young rich American woman (Alison Elliott) who falls for her lover when they meet at a party. When Helena Bonham Carter discovers that Alison Elloitt has a terminal illness she comes up with a plan to have both wealth and love.The is a well produced adaptaion of the Henry James novel with a good performance from Helena Bonham Carter. The film is based on the novel by Henry James.
