In early 17th century Amsterdam an orphan woman (Alicia Vikander) is married off to a rich merchant but falls in love with the painter her husband employs and then gets blackmailed by her maid (Holliday Grainger) as they both end up pregnant by their lovers. Meanwhile the painter tries to make his fortune in the tulip mania financial bubble. The problems with this film are the muddled plot unlikable characters and a strange view of Amsterdam in this period. The performances of Alicia Vikander and Holliday Grainger are OK, but overall the film is disappointing.
