Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers recapture the career of the ballroom dancing couple Vernon and Irene Castle who were a dancing sensation in Europe and America in the lead up to the first World War. This film evokes both impact that they had on dancing and society as well as the personal impact of the war. Although Irene Castle was known for her black bob hair cut, Ginger Rogers stayed blond, but did have the bob cut. The dancing in this film is different from their usual in that it reflects a more strictly ballroom style. This film was a financial failure for RKO and marked the end of the Astaire and Rogers partnership. The film was based on the biography of Irene Castle.
