A life story of a woman as goes through the whole range of life's emotions, trials and tribulations. A girl from the French country side is left unmarried and pregnant by her boyfriend. To survive she becomes mistress to a man who turns out to be a jewel thief and she ends up in prison as his acomplice. On release to put her son (who thinks she is dead) through medical school she turns to being a thief and prostitute. Helen Hayes gives an excellent performance that ranges from dowdy farmer, to socialite, to streetwalker, to elderly hag and rightly won an Oscar for her performance.
