Comment/Synopsis

A version of the ill fated expedition led by Captain Scott (John Mills) to be the first to reach the South Pole. This film gives the version of Scott as the British hero, but glosses over both his faults and those of the organisation of the expedition. Charles Freund made the film in a documentary style but on an epic scale. There is film shot in Antartica showing the vast and desolate landscapes and this is intercut with with close ups of the individuals and also the impact on the two of the wives. None of the actors left Ealing studios. Their scenes were cut into the second unit filming. Unusually for a British film at this time it was filmed in Technicolor. The film also benefits from the Vaughan Williams score that is set against silence.
