Steve Martin is the chief fireman in a small town who has a big nose. he falls for a beautiful scientist (Daryl Hannah) who moves into the town, but she is attracted by the new young fireman (Rick Rossovich). Steve Martin helps his colleague go on a date with Daryl Hannah by writing letters on his behalf and providing him with the lines to say. Although attracted by the young fireman, she realises that it is the writer of the letters and the words that she is love with. This is Steve Martin at his best, who is well supported by Daryl Hannah and Shelly Duvall. The strength of the film is the script that is a loose reworking of the Cyrano de Bergerac story with a script by Steve Martin. It is helped by an appropriate sound track (Bruce Smeaton) that adds to the film. This is a well cast and produced romantic comedy and this is one of my favourite films. If you want a more straight version of the play then the Joes Ferrer version of Cyrano de Bergerac is a good, but this will be a classic version of the story.
