A scientist and his wife build a transmitter that enables them to communicate with Mars, using a part built from plans designed by a Russian criminal. However the messages lead to economic instability and religious upheaval. This film was made at the hight of the cold war and the threat to America of the Russians. This is less sci-fi and more 1950's paranoid propaganda with religious overtones especially with the ambiguous ending.
