A cat burgler (Anton Walbrook) in Paris agrees to look after the grown up daughter (Rene Ray) of a friend who is sentenced to death and also starts a relationship with a rich woman who he meets by chance. He has an enigmatic relationship with his ward and is used and uses his relationship with Ruth Chatterton.
