An elderly couple (Jams Mason and Barbara Mullen) buy a house that is supposed to be haunted. They engage a young lady (Margaret Lockwood) as a companion who seemingly becomes possessed by the spirit of a woman who died, possibly murdered, in the house. This is a good period piece of mystery suspense with a supernatural theme. James Mason shows his character acting, playing a man considerably older than he was and Margaret Lockwood delivers a good performance as the woman possessed and also in love with the handsome young doctor.
