Cary Grant is a drifter from the east end of London who is a jack of all trades. He agrees to stay with his mother and run the family furniture shop when he finds out that she has cancer. The music teacher (Jane Wyatt) who lives across te road s inlove with hm, but he has an ambivalent attitude to her and also fancies the cashier (June Duprez) from the fun fair. The combination of poverty and aspiration leads them both into criminal activities. This is very different to most of Cary Grant's films. it was critically acclaimed but did badly at the box office as the public of the time wanted Cary Grant in romantic comedy roles.This is a well produced film with good performances from Cary Grant and the leading ladies and unusually for Hollywood of the time gives a grity view of the hardships of poverty in the 1940's. The film is based on the novel by Richard Llewellyn.
