A young woman (Ava Gardner) lives with her aunt and cousin (Melvin Douglas). She plans to marry a university doctor (Robert Mitchum), but is stopped by her family. She inherits money from a grandmother with a disreputable past and uses it to try and win back the doctor who has married (Janis Carter) in the meantime. Robert Mitchum seems mis-cast in an historical drama, Ava Gardner shows off her natural beauty and Janis Carter is good as the scheming wife.
