Comment/Synopsis
A scientist attempts to show the connection between ape and man by injecting women with ape blood, but the women keep dying. A man uncovers the work when girlfriend is kidnapped but has difficulty persuading the police what is happening. There is a good performance from Bela Lugosi as the scientist in this atmospheric version of the Edgar Allan Poe story. Robert Florey and Carl Laemmle create an almost expressionist feel to the film with the lighting and camera angles. The final scene of the ape carrying Sidney Fox has shadows of King Kong. This was the first film of Arlene Francis though a number of her scenes were cut as they were considered to violent even for a pre-code film.
