After a period of time in space the spacecraft bringing three American astronauts back to earth malfunctions and a desperate rescue mission is launched to to save them. This film has a slowly developed pace that to builds to the final climax and is about the characters and not the effects (despite an Oscar for the effects) or action. The highlights of the film are Gene Hackman on the edge of a breakdown and the different responses of the wives to the situation. The wives have small parts, but bring emotion and humanity to a film that is otherwise lacking these characteristics, not least from a totally unemotional character of Gregory Peck.
