Kirsten Dunst plays the young Austrian Duchess who becomes queen of France and lives a decadent lifestyle whilst her subjects are suffering starvation, high taxes and planning a revolution. Kirsten Dunst portrays the increasingly decadent queen well, given that there is no plot to this film and virtually no connection to some of the most dramatic events in French history. There is some nice cinematography and some impressive late 18th century costumes (Kirsten Dunst has a large selection) but a lack of plot and character development makes this an unsatisfying film, despite the good cast.
