A woman (Ruth Chatterton) is cast of her home and prevented from seeing her young son. She goes off round the world having affairs and when she returns to France she kills a man and her now grown up son defends her without knowing she is his mother. This is an early sound version of the French novel and in places the restriction of early sound filmsmakes it quite static. However it the performance of Ruth Chatterton with all her emotions that carries the film and a performance that gave her one of her two best actress nominations.
