Comment/Synopsis
An alcoholic (Ray Milland) recalls how he became an alcoholic and how a woman (Jane Wyman) he meets by chance, falls in love with him, and works to turn his life around. Ray Milland rightly won an Oscar for his performance as the alcoholic struggling with his addiction despite the efforts of his girlfriend and brother (Philip Terry). There is good support from Jane Wyman, but it is Ray Millard and his performance that makes the film. There is good direction from Billy Wilder in the Film Noir style and the incidental music helps build the atmosphere. Billy Wilder was the first person to win an Oscar for director and screenplay.
