In the 17th century one family dominates and abuses another family and a young woman (Barbara Hale) from the dominant family is in love with a boy from the other family. This is one of a number of film versions of the story and it is a pleasant and entertaining version though not a great version. The earlier silent veriosn from 1922 from director Maurice Tourneur is a better version of the story.
