An ex-soldier (Henry Fonda) who now works in a factory shoots a man and hides in a room surrounded by police. In a series of flash backs we discover the events and people which led to this situation. As the story unfolds we find that his girlfriend (Barbara Bel Geddes) has been an assistant to a magician (Vincent Price) who taunts him. This leads to a strange love triangle and a film that is dark and emotional, even though some parts do not quite hold together. Henry Fonda and Vincent Price give strong performances. This was Barbara Bel Geddes first film role in which she gives a good performance and there is good support from Ann Dvorak.
