When her father goes off to the Boer War, a young girl is left at an expensive private school. However when he is reported killed in action, she is left a pauper and has to work for her keep. She does not beleive that he is dead and goes round the hospitals looking for her father. It is the performance from Shirley Temple that makes this film. The plot of this technicolor version differs significantly from the original book and from the 1917 silent version.
