After a quite unpleasant Victorian lady dies, the post-mortem shows arsenic poisoning, suspicion falls on the husband (David Farrar), the companion (Geraldine Fitzgerald) he is in love with and the housekeeper (Jean Cadell). As the police inspector investigates the suspects start to doubt each other and turn against each other. Whilst the plot is a basic murder mystery, what makes the film is the atmospheric feel and all the emotions and tension that arise during the investigation. An engrossing British film film from the 1950's.
