Comment/Synopsis

A seaman who is down on his luck and has a history saves a beautiful lady from being robbed. He is then persuaded to help crew a pleasure yacht for her, her husband and his business partner. He is manipulated by all three of them as he lets his passion for her draw him into a complex web of deceit and finally murder. This has a typically complex film noir plot, but it is the production from Orson Welles that makes this film stand out, despite it being recut by the studio. It is also helped by a sensual performance from sultry Rita Hayworth to whom he was married at the time. Unusually Rita Hayworth has short blonde hair rather than her usual long red hair. Orson Welles wanted this to fit with the film-noir style. The bizarre court room scene and the final shoot out scene in the hall of mirrors have become classic.
