A woman (Joan Blondell) who runs a gambling enterprise on a river boat has aspirations to join the social set, but is rejected because of what she does despite having money. She gets what she wants by marrying into one of the social familes (Ray Middleton) and by paying off their debts, but discovers that the life and the people in society are not what she expected. Whilst the plot revolves around Joan Blondell's desire for upward mobility, it is John Wayne's character that pulls all the political and emotional strings.
