At the end of the 18th century a woman (Paulette Goddard) from the poor streets is caught stealing. She is taken in by one of the aristocracy who decides to turn her into a lady, and by a mixture of design and good fortune she climbs the social ladder. The character of Kitty is a cross between Eliza Doolittle and Becky Sharp. This is an entertaining comedy of a woman moving up through society by assorted means, whilst not great cinema, it is fun to watch and Paulette Goddard is entertaing as Kitty, but it is Constance Collier who steals the scenes she is in.
