Frances Dee is a Canadian nurse who accepts a job looking after the wife (Christine Gordon) of Paul Holland who runs a plantation on an island in the West Indies. The wife has a mental illness that has left her in a zombie like state. When Frances Dee takes her to a vodoo ceramony she sets in motion a set of events that leads to tragic consequenses. In this film Jacques Tourneur and Val Lewton produced a horror film that is built on suspense and atmosphere and not shock and gore and was one of several they made for RKO in the mid 1940's. Val Lewton described this as Jayne Eyre in the West Indies.
