Comment
Richard Johnson is investigating ghosts and so invites three other people (Julie Harris, Claire Bloom and Russ Tamblyn) to stay in a remote mansion that has a reputation for being haunted. Once in the mansion they start to be terrified by a series of noises and events. This is not blood and gore horror, but an old fashioned horror where the tension builds through the film by what you do not see, rather than what you do see. It is well filmed in black and white which enhances the atmosphere. The best of the scenes are those between Julie Harris and Claire Bloom as Julie Harris steadily starts to doubt her sanity as she hears more and moe voices. Director Robert Wise considered this one of his best films.
