A wealthy man (Charles Coburn) with no relatives decides to leave his wealth to the family of his first love. He was poor at the time and she rejected him for someone with money. He decides to visit them undercover to see what they are like and how they would cope with suddenly becoming rich. When he anonymously gives them a large donation the mother (Lynn Bari) wants to spend it all on social climbing and her social aspirations whilst the daughter (Piper Laurie) and her poor fiancé (Rock Hudson) break up over the money whilst her mother pushes her towards what she considers a more appropriate man from a wealthy family. In many ways this is a satire on greed and a desire for social standing over love and happiness. It does have several songs which seem curiously out of place. The best performance in the film is from Charles Coburn as the undercover wealthy man.
