A young writer stats a correspondence with a man on the island of Guernsey in 1946. She visits the island to find out about the society and discovers what happened to the group during the German occupation of Guernsey. She uncovers a story of love, friendship and care despite the occupation. Mike Newell has produced a beautifully filmed story with sympathetic characters. Lily James is good in the lead role and Penelope Wilton is good as the woman trying to come to terms with the loss of family during the war. On one level this is a typical romance but the strength of the fim is the underlying back stories and characters.
