A dancer (Joan Crawford) in a travelling circus gets stranded in a small town. She gets involved with the deputy sheriff (Zachary Scott) which upsets the sheriff (Sydney Greenstreet), who has plans for him and is corrupt person who runs the town and has plans to run the state. She gets involved in an increasingly complex mix of romance, corruption, politics and power. Joan Crawford is good as the dancer who becomes a waitress and then the wife of a raising political star on the back of a corrupt politician Sydney Greenstreet is also good as the corrupt politician using everybody else.
