A couple living in San Francisco get enagaged a year after meeting and then start to plan their wedding. She (Emily Blunt) gets offered a post-doctoral post in psychology in Michigan and they move there but he (Jason Segel) struggles to fnd a job after turning down a head chef job in San Francisco to be with her. As their relationship comes under pressure she has an affair with her professor (Rhys Ifans) and he goes back to California, starts his own business and meets a younger woman (Dakota Johnson). This is a mix a bawdy comedy, serious psychology and typical rom-com plot which leaves the film very uneven. There aare a few funny scenes and jokes, but it needed tighter editing as many scenes we too long and would have been equally effective being shorter.
