Comment/Synopsis

In the early 1900's an immigrant to Peru wants to build an Opera house in the remote Amazon town but needs money to do so. He therefore comes up with a plan to make money through a rubber plantation but it involves sailing up a river into dangerous indigenous people and then dragging the boat up and over a mountain into another river. The film shows the lengths someone will go to to achieve their dream that contrasts his vision and his foolishness. Whilst in many ways the film is bloated and over indulgent from director Werner Herzog, it is also visually stunning especially the scenes of pulling the ship up the mountain. Today this would be done using computer graphics and green screens rather than actually pulling a ship up a mountain. The filming has become a legend for its difficulty, not least the very difficult behaviour of Klaus Kinski.
