Queen Anne is getting old and infirm, so her companion the scheming Lady Sarah holds most of the power. Then a girl from an aritocratic family who has fallen on hard times arrives on the scene as a servant only to start to displace lady Sarah from the queen's affections. The plot is curious as it is part historical drama and part lesbian love triangle. Despite the film being somewhat odd, there are very good performances from the three leading women with Oliva Colman winning the best actress Oscar and Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone getting nominated for best supporting actress.
