In the late 1800's a young woman (Phyllis Calvert) discovers that her father was running a brothel under her house, and when he is killed she finds out that he was not really her father but she is the illegitimate daughter of an up and coming politician and this changes her life which then takes a series of ups and downs. This is an episodic film that highlights the social ambiguities and sexual double standards of Victorian Britain. The script has its ups and downs, and Phyllis Calvert is capable in the lead role, Stewart Granger is not very dynamic as the love interest and James mason only has a few very small scenes.
