The way of life on an Outer Hebridean island is dying and two families clash over leaving or staying on the island leading to tragedy. Michael Powell's film evokes a way of life that that was disappearing in the 1930's, but so with a warmth and sensitivity to the characters. Belle Chrystall gives a good performance as the women caught between a brother and a lover.
