A doctor takes a chemical potion he has created that separates his good and evil sides. Dr Jekyll is in love with a rich society woman and Mr Hyde uses and abuses the serving girl from the local pub. This is a well produced and well acted version of the R L Stephenson novel. It is the performance of Ingrid Bergman that makes the film as she appeals to Dr Jekyll to save her from Mr Hyde, in this one of her less glamorous roles. There is also plenty of passion from the three lead actors, especially Spencer Tracy's menacing and slightly manic Mr Hyde. Spencer Tracy had one of the best roles in 1940's cinema, as the lover to both Lana Turner and Ingrid Bergman.
