Comment
A woman (Merle Oberon) grows up knowing two men and just before they go off to World War 1 she agrees to marry one of them (Fredric March). The two men fall out and one them (Herbert Marshall) sends the man she has agreed to marry out on a dangerous mission that he does not return from. They assume he is dead but is is blinded and after returning from a POW camp cannot face meting them again. This love triangle is set in England against the background of World War 1, but is about, love betrayal and the stiff upper lip. There is a very good performance fromMerle Oberon for which she got her only Oscar nomination. There is good support from Fredric March and Marshall. The film is dated only in the sense that it follows the social conventions and norms of the period, though it is possible to get frustrated with Fredric March's charcters attitudes in the second half of the film.
