Comment
When the reamants of the Cheyenne tribe are not delivered the food they were promised, in order to not starve they decide to leave the reservation and return to their home land. The local army comander (Richard Widmark) is tasked to stop them but the local school teacher (Carroll Baker) goes with them and he is torn between stopping them and helping them. This was John Ford's last western and is a mixed bag of a film.It gives some sense of the desperation of the native tribe, but the film is overlong and there is a very strange section in the middle with James Stewart as Wyart Earp that has no link to the rest of the film and its comic feel is out of context with the rest of the film. Richard Widmark give s good performance in the lead and he is well supported by Carroll Baker and Dolores del Rio.
