A Chinese man (Richard Barthelmess) arrives in England as a missionary, but is soon disolusioned by the squalor and he runs a shop in a poor area of London. He sees a young woman (Lillian Gish) who is abused by her father (Donald Crisp) who is a boxer and a bully. One day she collapses outside the chinaman's shop and he takes her in. However the brutal father discovers what has happened with fatal consequences. Despite being in her mid 20's Lillian Gish is wonderfull as the young girl who is abused by one man and treated with kindness by another man, and whose eyes and facial expressions expressive so much pain and fear.
