A federal agent (Robert Taylor) is sent to an island off central America to investigate the smuggling of aeroplane engines. His suspects include a night club singer (Ava Gardner) and her husband (John Hodiak) and the pie man (Charles Laughton). This is a good thriller in the film noir style which is well filmed with good understated performances from all the four main characters. Robert Taylor is the agent torn between doing his job and his love for a married woman who is a suspectn and Ava Gardner is the woman caught between her husband and a new man she has feelings for. However it is Charles Laughton who steals the scenes he is in as the slimy, overweight pie man.
