Comment/Synopsis
In the north of England the local pit is due to be closed down with the consequent effect on the town and the colliery band. With a national competition coming up, a girl from the village (Tara Fitzgerald) who now works for the management joins the band that is run by Pete Postlewaite. The situation is complicated by her being the childhood sweetheart of one of the band members (Ewan Mc Gregor). A good example of British cinema reflecting the social change related to the loss of traditional industries particularly its effect on families and close knit communities. This is probably the best performance from Pete Postlewaite.
