In 19th century Paris a series women are strangled to death and suspision turns to a pupeteer who paints portraits and then strangles the women afterwards. This film is a curious mix of murder mystery, historical drama, puppet theatre and opera. John Carradine is suitably forboding and sinister and with good support from Jean Parker.
