A boat captain (John Wayne) imprisoned by the communist Chinese is rescued by members of a rural village, including a western woman (Lauren Bacall) who wants him to pilot a paddle steamer to the freedom of Hong Kong. Whilst this has propaganda overtones, it is still essentially an adventure story with good performances from both John Wayne and Lauren Bacall.
