The girl friend of a police detective is attracted by an artist who lures her back to his flat, tries to rape her and she kills him in self defence. The boyfriend who is a policeman soon realises she killed the man as did a witness who blackmails them. This was Alfred Hitchcocks first sound film and the first British sound film. It was initially made as a silent film and sections of the film show that origin and are also effective. Some scenes are also early examples of what would become the classic Hitchcock style (mirrors, sound effects and attention to small details). Whilst this is not the best example of Hitchcock's films it is a good example of his early work. Because of her accent Anny Ondra's voice was dubbed by English actress Joan Barry. The first example of a foreign actor dubbed into English.Most people in England only saw the silent version as the cinema's were not equiped for sound films.
