A retired sea captain (Gregory Peck) goes out to the west to marry his fiancé (Carroll Baker) where he gets caught up in a war over water rights (owed by Jean Simmons) between her family and a neighbouring family. There are good performances from the lead characters but it is the background of the countryside that dominates the film. The theme tune is the most well known part of the film.
