Robert Mitchum is an ex-racing driver who now drives ambulances for the hospital. He is called to the apparent suicide of a wealthy woman and meets her step daughter (Jean Simmons). She persuades him to become chauffer to the family with the offer of money to support his garage and racing career. However when he decides that he wants to leave things take a sinister turn. Otto Preminger has delivered a a good film noir with Jean Simmons giving a good performance as the femme fatal who as an endearing innocence as well as underlying obsessive condition. Her understated performance is in good contrast to Robert Mitchum's dead pan performance and there is a nice twist in the tail of the film. This was the second film Jean Simmons made for RKO.
